Free speech & State Farm Insurance

In response to the article State Farm: Good deeds overlooked, we were treated to this eye-opening comment:

Sun Herald Article Comments: "THIS IS SO NOT THE INSURANCE COMPANIES FAULT. You have to have the intelligence to ask WHAT IS NOT COVERED AND PAY FOR IT. You people live right on the water and also are surrounded by it. I don't understand what part you people don't realize. New Orleans got hit way worse than the coast and yet you guys are living off the love of making stupid memorials. Give me a break. Are y'all going to live under that hideous memorial after the next hurricane? Didn't think so...so let's just watch you blame anyone and everyone, except for the people that really caused this. The cheap homeowners or sorry poor homeowners.

Perhaps I haven't typed this slowly enough for some people:
I am aware that we live in the coast and that there is a very real threat from damage by hurricanes. This is why we pay a whole lot of money every year for hurricane coverage in addition to a basic policy. This is why we have accepted that our policy includes an extra 'hurricane deductible'. We live in a hurricane zone and we carried hurricane insurance. Now -- had we lived in a flood zone then we also would have paid the measely 300 dollars per year for flood insurance -- a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of hurricane insurance. If, however, our agent had informed us that hurricane insurance does not actually cover damage from a hurricane if any of that damage is wet then we probably would have walked out of his office and searched for a more sane insurance agent. Ah... maybe that's why these guys didn't inform us afterall, huh?**

The 'cheap' homeowners? The poor homeowners? We cheap homeowners pay through the nose each year for 'special perils' coverage. As for the 'poor' homeowners -- you do realize that the poor homeowners aren't the ones filing the lawsuits don't you?

"New Orleans got hit way worse than the coast and yet you guys are living off the love of making stupid memorials."

The words I would like to use in response to this idiotic statement would not be appropriate -- children read this blog.

This is the kind of bull that keeps me up at night.

**For the record: We have not sued our insurance company. We accepted the fact that we had been swindled and simply give our dog Snoopy toys to chew on in effigy rather than subject ourselves to further swindling by the legal community.
