"Regular" Californians fight fires on their own, because the federal government is out to lunch. Or, more accurately, the National Guard is mostly in Iraq:

Does this sound familiar..

Wow! There it is again... First of all... I REALLY want to travel out there and high-five each and everyone one of those 'regular' Californians. YES! People are fantastic.. People WILL step up and step in to get things done when it needs to be done.

However - we're back to that really frustrating subject of whether or not us 'regular' folks are really supposed to be put into these positions (on what appears to be an increasingly frequent basis) at all. The answer is no.

It's not whining or waiting for a government handout. Is it the government's role to assist us in every day affairs or interfere in our personal lives in the process? No matter how many people say 'yes' - I'm sorry but no, it was never meant to be. However - it was the role of the federal government to step in and provide assistance when dealing with large scale disasters or invasions that the individual states do not have the resources to handle on their own. OH the irony... When those state resources (say, such as the National Guard) are not available because of a Federal action to begin with... (Not to mention the resources once controlled and allocated at the state level which have now been claimed by a federal agency (insert 'emergency management' in the middle there) that is incapable and/or unwilling to allocate such resources...)

All I can say is that we all need to sharpen our axes.. learn to grow our own food.. and brush up on basic survival and rescue skills.. NOW. We're on our own.
