Voila!

After taking one of the longest breaks from blogging I have ever taken in an effort to recuperate from whatever odd illness I have contracted this time - I am here to report that I don't feel any better than I did before.

However - we have news! The skylights, the opening where the hated wall once stood, and the moved bathroom/gameroom wall are all complete.

We had a huge amount of driving rain during the middle of the week as expected -- but could detect no leaks from the freshly-flashed lights. (Phew!) So the guys came in Friday and finished hanging sheetrock and tying up all the loose ends.

I LOVE THE SKYLIGHTS. It's amazing that something that required major changes has turned out to look like it has been there all along. I couldn't be happier with how it looks.

And I couldn't be more impressed either. Anyone who has been reading my blog for a while knows that we have encountered more than our fair share of contractors and handymen over the last 20 months. The majority of those turned out to be mostly talk - and very little skill to back it up. (If I had a nickel for every time a grand machismo guy with a hammer took a job only to stand there clueless the first day of the project....)

We had mentioned our skylight idea to some of those contractors as well. Every time we were met with a wince and some hesitation before the answer would come: "Well of course I can DO it but it will cost a LOT of money...." (Dean was decent enough to admit that he simply didn't want the job when I point-blank asked him about it a couple of months ago. Score two points for Dean.)

And so, yes... I had grown skeptical. We've had trouble getting the simplest jobs done properly around here... And our skylight/shaft/big tall roof project was anything but simple.

These guys came in and got to work. They worked around whatever had to be worked around... Braved our roof... Suffered the tragedy of cracked glass... Yet all of the work was solid and careful. And the end result is even better than I had expected.

Mom came over this afternoon and attempted to take more representative pictures than I had managed to take so far... But she had no better luck than I. You'll have to take my word for it then -- it's great.

It's time for me to go take my daily dose of Benadryl to get through the rest of the afternoon now. But I just wanted to say one more time: Thanks to Bobby, Jake, Boz, and Derek for a fantastic job. We'll call you guys when the room is done - bring your families - we'll supply the Dr. Pepper and sweet tea.
