We are back in the house. It is very clean and very cool. It's nice for it to smell so good. We have air conditioning and running water AND more importantly - HOT water. I took the longest and most satisfying shower of my life today.
We're shocked and delighted that our refrigerator is working. I am not going to question it -- just appreciate it. We're still under a boil order -- but our cooktop is working just fine and at least we have water to boil. We tried the dishwasher but it started smoking and spewing water -- so I guess that means it's dead. We're going to see about having it repaired instead of trying to replace it. The washer and dryer only worked for a few minutes before starting to spark and smoke as well and Dave has them out at the curb now.
We still don't have a telephone and Bellsouth isn't exactly confident about being able to fix it even by the end of October. I suppose I don't blame them -- they have a lot to deal with.. but I'm not too pleased with their way of handling things. I was told that if I did not want to receive a bill I could disconnect my service and they would let me reconnect in a few months at no charge. I'm trying to figure out why I would be receiving a bill for a service that is out of order -- that they KNOW is out of order... But apparently the only way to not receive a bill is to disconnect. (Disconnect what? The phone doesn't work...) Of course we're paying for internet service too and I'm not sure why. They suggested that we simply downgrade that account to dial-up so I wouldn't lose my email address and then we could reconnect DSL later. Again I ask - why am I paying for dial-up when I don't have a phone line to dial-up on? Grrr... I'll deal with them later but I am going to have to think of some way to simply not use Bellsouth anymore.
We need to buy a lawnmower. The grass is higher than I've ever seen it. Apparently St. Augustine likes salt water. The rest of the garden is rather crispy with the exception of the rose bushes and the irises. There is no mulch and the soil has washed up in a lot of places. There is a lot of work to do - outside and in.
The restoration crew is gone now - but we have noticed a few things they missed and are trying to have them taken care of. They also seem to have gotten rushed at some point and started leaving the nails in the walls and breaking a lot of the trim and moulding they were supposed to be saving. The biggest thing is they took the sheetrock off in a section of the house adjoining the garage -- and then also took out the sheetrock in the garage so there is a large hole leading directly outside. The cat loves it and goes back and forth constantly... but then so does the dog... And everything else that wants to get in or out of our house. We'll have to cover it with something soon.
