Katrina still claiming victims
"Current Mayor Walter “Buzz” Jack, as well as Former Mayor Pat Lightsey and other community leaders attended the school. A number of them gathered at the site at various times throughout the week to watch the demolition and look for anything from the rubbish that could be savaged as a keepsake.
They all hated to see their beloved school, which later became Sandersville Special Consolidated School, demolished. However, former students and employees understood hazardous conditions necessitated the destruction of the building.
“Damage to the roof from Hurricane Katrina and rotting floors made the school
completely unusable, explained Chuck Benigno, director of school improvement for the Jones County School District. “The gym and some newer buildings will remain.”"
