SunHerald.com : Carter Work Project: "From May 11 until May 16, Pres. Jimmy Carter, his wife Rosalynn, and thousands of volunteers will help build affordable housing for Katrina victims along the Gulf Coast. Their visit is part of the annual Carter Work Project of Habitat for Humanity, and this year, three of their Gulf Coast stops will be in Diamondhead, Biloxi and Pascagoula. The whole project will create 250 homes from New Orleans to Pascagoula."


The need for affordable housing along the Coast is tremendous, said Kent Adcock of Habitat for Humanity Gulf Coast, which serves Harrison, Jackson and Stone Counties. Since the storm, Habitat has built about 200 homes all over the Coast. “It’s how the broader community of humanity contributes to make people whole again,” he said. As of March 31, he said, there are still about 33,000 people and families in FEMA and MEMA housing who need homes, plus many others still living with family and friends.

The Sun Herald will be following the progress of the homes and the visit of the Carters. Check back for updates, interviews and video as the Coast continues to rebuild, one house at a time.

Thursday, May 15: The Carters will be at the Diamondhead site and the Covington, La. site
Friday, May 16: The Carters will visit completed homes in Pascagoula and in Biloxi
