"Lawrence", the inspector from Allied American, got to the house right around 1 pm for the reinspection. He told us that a lot of people had appealed their grants based on the percent damage assessment.. and he explained to us where the percent damage assessment came from... Basically - the percent damage estimate comes from the other figures.. It is not an independent actual assessment of the damage to your home. This is exactly what Mr. Brown from Allied told me on the telephone several months ago.
He explained that there were homes of lesser value than ours.. with approximately the same type of damage -- however - those assessments averaged around 40 - 50% whereas ours was set at 20% simply because it takes less of a percentage in the calculation to arrive at the same amount of money. Again - no mystery...
He then told us that his own assessment is not in agreement with our previous assessments on two points: square footage and cost per square foot to rebuild. The last assessor shorted us about 500 square feet on the size of the house... and about $30 per foot on the cost.
We won't know what any of these means until MDA gets the info and processes it and whatever else they do with stuff.... But, ironically, so far it seems that just about the only thing that won't really change from our assessment since appeal is the percent damage estimate -- the very thing we appealed. The new assessor says that this figure will only increase to about 23 or 24% when taking all the other changes into consideration.

Tick tock. In the meantime - although we heard from Dean earlier today.. and although Dean said he'd be coming by to do something this afternoon... Time's ticking and he's not here yet. Honestly - I can use a nice quiet afternoon.. so no rush.
