In these days when almost anything seems newsworthy....
We have someone coming tomorrow morning to look at our cabinets and decide whether or not she would be able to refinish them and how much that would cost. We would much rather have them refinished than ripped out and replaced, obviously... So we're keeping our fingers crossed.
Failing that, however, we have an appointment scheduled with Grimes cabinets to come give us an estimate on October 2nd... and we're on waiting lists with a couple other cabinet-makers as well. It's a good guess that cabinetry is going to be the major hold up once we start getting repairs done.
We're also still waiting on our grant check to arrive. It's far from over-due at this point - so we're not worried yet.
However, our countertop for the laundry room is edging much closer to overdue. We had originally received a phone call from the installer right after we placed our order - and it was too good to be true: he had called in error. However, it is now approaching one month since that erroneous phone call.... If the laundry counters aren't in by the middle of next week we are going to have to start harrassing people.
--------------------- In an unrelated story ------------------
Some big kids knocked William off his bike (okay, technically George's bike) today while he was riding around the block. They then ran off with the bike. William, of course, did exactly what we told him to do in such situations and came home to tell me. Er.. well.. sort of... He didn't exactly come home to tell me until after he followed the kids and waited for them to be distracted so he could sneak in and steal the bike back. *groan*
We called the police for whatever reason... mostly to let William know that it's not okay for big kids to knock him off his bike (er.. George's bike) and steal it. And also so that another adult could tell him that it was all very brave and exciting -- but when something like that happens he should leave the bike and come home for adult help.
The police officer rode around the neighborhood and talked to some neighbors but couldn't find the kids.... He said he'd still ask for some extra patrols over the weekend to keep an eye out for potential troublemakers.
I guess if it were just a 'kids in the neighborhood' sort of prank it wouldn't be quite the drama... but these were not kids that William knew... and, I admit, we've been a little extra paranoid lately with the windshield smashings, car fires, and constant rummaging through glove boxes in the driveways going on around here.
------------------ End of unrelated story ----------------------
We've also put some calls into our preferred contractor to get a handle on when things can get started around here.... Er.. of course... we haven't actually been able to get him to come out just yet.
We also discovered that our downstairs air handler is dying. (I'll add some pictures of the carnage later.) We replaced both of our condensing units outside since they were submerged in salt water and not exactly functioning (please see sidebar thank you to our neighbor who alerted us when one was on fire...) But we were hoping to get some more use out of the air handler since the water did not reach the unit. With all the salt water humidity in the house though -- and most likely with salt water backing up through the drain, etc... The coils are now a barely recognizable rusty glob. This is not conducive to efficient air-handling I am told. The bottom line is that we are now facing an additional $2,000 to $3000 expense in the near future that we had not figured into previous estimates. Yay!
It's times like these when I almost envy people who are starting from scratch. For how long are we going to have to tweak and repair things that were either directly or indirectly destroyed by Katrina anyway?
Still.. note that I said almost envy. Looming mental health crisis aside -- I'm not that nuts yet.
