Shunned! Maybe...

A long, long time ago before life became so surreal George dreamed of attending Camp Invention..."A weeklong summer enrichment day experience for children entering grades one through six" according to Camp Invention's website. Unfortunately the events of life prevented us from sending George to the camp, that is, until this year. Anita and I explained to poor George that we were sorry he could not go but that someday we would send him. He took it well but Anita and I have thought about it ever since. So, tonight I excitedly went to search for the upcoming camp locations to register only to find that the closest site in Mississippi is in Hattiesburg. My first thought was that this was another unfortunate event (we have been listening to Lemony Snicket's audiobooks perfomed by Tim Curry), but then I began to wonder if we have been shunned by Camp Invention! How can there be no camps here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast? The Gulf Coast is one of the largest metro areas in the state. Surely there is enough interest to support at least one camp. Our children like to imagine, create, and invent. I'm sure I am simply being paranoid or oversensitive and there is a logical explanation for this absence. Maybe they couldn't afford the insurance. I hope whatever the error was will be worked out in time for next year when we will welcome Camp Invention to the coast again.

That's a shame. Poor George.

Since your kids are home schooled, I wonder if there is enough stuff on the Exploratorium web site at
http://www.exploratorium.edu/
to interest them instead?

Not as much fun as actually being at camp, but lots of things to learn.

Or there is fun stuff on the Rough Science website, like how to make a saucepan radio
http://www.pbs.org/weta/roughscience/series1/challenges/radio/page3.html

Maybe too old for him?

trudy - the pbs/weta website looks like great fun... i think we could try our hands at making a radio as a family... George will get a kick out of it too!

Thanks for both links -- the boys will enjoy them.
