By any other name

In case you're wondering why absolutely nothing has happened with our bathroom or roof projects recently.... I just want you all to know - it's not our fault.

It started with the Mohawk Trapani Charcoal tile. If you check out Mohawk's website - the tile can be easily found by browsing the 'Slate Collection' in the Product Gallery. However, it wasn't so easily found at the local authorized Mohawk distributor. As a matter of fact - it wasn't found at all.
Instead, the closest thing the Mohawk sample board had was a tile from the Patagonia series in Noce. Oddly, the Patagonia series cannot be found on the Mohawk website. *scratches head* What could be happening here? Either Mohawk is not updating their website or the distributor is not updating their sample boards.....

Either of which is exactly what happened with regard to our shingles as well. Two weeks ago our contractor was given the go ahead to order our shingles from the Timberline distributor in the lovely shade of "Heather Blend". Of course, we were unable to locate "Heather Blend" on any of the Timberline websites. What we did find was a color called "Barkwood" - which is actually the color we asked for originally based on our internet research. (And as I recall, trudy left a reader comment referring to Barkwood as well on one of our earlier roof posts.) However, both of the contractors who came to the house to give estimates presented sample boards where Barkwood was conspicuously absent - and Heather Blend was conspicuously present. Which brings us to exactly why we ordered "Heather Blend" when what we really wanted was "Barkwood".

Yesterday, our roofing contractor stopped by with a new sample board. He said he got a call from the supplier telling him that "Heather Blend" had been discontinued... and that we'd need to order a new color and wait another two weeks. Guess what color I picked from that new sample board? That's right. Barkwood.

Which now brings us to why we haven't actually gone through the process of ordering that Patagonia in Noce tile just yet.... Something tells me we'll run into the same long waiting process only to be told that the tile is discontinued so that we can then order the tile that we wanted in the first place as if it were the distributor's idea instead of our own.

We'll be going to a different tile store in the future to see if we have any better luck with updated sample boards.

**(An aside: Thanks to trudy for pre-warning me about the huge color variation on the big "Barkwood" sample board... If you hadn't already mentioned it - I'd be really worried right now..)**

You might try calling the GAF sales office to be sure of what you're getting. I still have a folder with itty samples (including barkwood) and the southeast sales number on it is 813-829-8880.

(I went to the distributor to see the big sample board, which they let me drag out to the house.)

I think I called the number on the web site before I picked the shingle. I was confused about wind ratings, and they were quite helpful, also about which was the cheapest shingle that met those. I can't figure out now which number that was, corporate main? technical?

Those sample boards could be years old. I'd call the manufacturer's local rep to confirm color choices. Should your contractor do this? Yes, but they don't.

Hope you are doing okay and are not too bummed out by all this.
