Those pesky Katrina house X's

For the last six or seven months there has been a steady stream of Google referrals to this blog from people searching for the meaning of those spray-painted X's on the side of houses post-Katrina.

We didn't get any X's in our neighborhood... No one ever checked our houses for survivors. Maybe that's why we're not sure if we survived or not.

All I really knew about the X's was that when I saw them on a house that otherwise survived Katrina pretty well on the exterior I could only imagine just how irritating it would be to have to re-brick your house just to get rid of the spray-painted X.

But now - thanks to an archived post from Ray in New Orleans, I know the story behind those search and rescue markings. And you can too if you check out his post on the subject HERE.
