Laying out the slate for the garden path...
We're only about 70 tiles and 280 lbs of sand short at the moment.
It's just too pretty out to force ourselves to stay inside today. Besides - we don't have any major projects-in-progress that we can actually finish indoors today. We did decide on a tile for the upstairs bathroom floor following our natural slate disappointment. We love our Mohawk slate-look ceramic kitchen floor so much - we went back to the same slate-look collection for the bathroom and have settled on Mohawk Trapani in Charcoal.
In the meantime, we got another roof-replacement estimate from a couple of local fellows Friday morning. As far as the bid goes -- the money was almost to the penny of our first estimate (approximately $16k). However, because we feel much, much more comfortable working with local people who don't already have their suitcases packed... Also because this bid includes a 10 year workmanship warranty - as opposed to 1 year from the other guys... And because they actually gave us a couple addresses for references of roofs they've completed... OH and 'cause we just liked them better... (Maybe because Shelter actually did stand us up before) We won't be calling Shelter back.

But today is not roofing day - or bathroom floor-laying day... Today is work-outside-cause-it's pretty day. Hopefully we'll have some completed path pictures to share by the end of the day.

The path looks absolutely smashing!
I love that path! I have 100 sf of slate tiles that I have been trying to figure out what to do with... I might have to try that! Did you use just masonary sand underneath for the footing?
Thanks sandy :)
@Jennifer - we used an extra thick layer of paver sand for the base and we are currently packing the whole thing in even more paver sand after wetting it down. When it dries out we'll sweep what's left on top into the joints and then let the dog run on it until it's packed. :)
We are guessing we'll get some shifting though since the tile isn't as heavy as say saltillo tile or something similar. Therefore, if the shifting is bad (i.e. if the dog greets me at the backdoor in the morning with slate in his mouth)then we will have to come up with a plan for keeping the tiles in place until our grass grows in to keep everything where it should be.
Your upbeat attitude amazes me. You give me courage to face more mundane challenges than a life altering hurricane event.
I love the path and plan on stealing some of your decorating and landscaping ideas.
Thank you very much. It's that sort of encouragement that keeps me upbeat on the most frustrating of days.
I had to have my roof replaced a few months ago, and got GAF Timberline Prestique barkwood (aka heather) shingles. The town required shingles rated for 110 mph, so these were about it unless I wanted to spend a giant bundle more. The roof cost about $7000. I think my house is smaller than yours, though, the footprint is about 800 sq ft, but the house is two story and the roof is quite sharply pitched.
I was a little worried, because on the big sample board there was quite a lot of color variation, but once they were on the roof, they look one color, either a medium/dark brown or almost black, depending on the light.
trudy you have made my day!!! I'm pretty sure those are the shingles we'll be using - I know they're GAF Timberline and I know they're rated at 110mph (and that the next step up was a HUGE leap in price)... And I have been a little worried about the color on the sample board... But dark brown/almost black would be exactly what I'm going for. Now I'm excited.
AND our price is close to in line with yours as well if we double the footprint - so that's a relief.
But mostly I'm excited about the color. *grin*
