Our Opinion Raiding Pascagoula to pay others: "Robertson, R-Moss Point, introduced a bill, which passed in the closing hours of the session, to apportion new property taxes from the expansion of oil refineries and liquefied natural gas terminals in Jackson County to all of the county's school districts.

The revenue comes from facilities that are in Jackson County, but are also within the Pascagoula School District. The oil refinery is Chevron and the planned liquefied natural gas terminal is in the county. Both are in the Pascagoula School District."

Robertson claims his bill is one of 'fairness and equity for all Jackson County school districts' - and one would think that he would be proud of putting such a fine bill before the legislature. Why then... Did the people with the most at stake concerning this bill have absolutely no idea what was happening until it was too late? Superintendent Wayne Rodolfich seems to agree with me: From the Mississippi Press dated March 29, 2007:

"Superintendent Wayne Rodolfich, who was in Jackson trying to convince lawmakers to vote against the bill, said he drove to Jackson as soon as he heard about the bill on Sunday. The section bill was introduced into conference committee Saturday.

'I say if it's such a noble bill, why would it have to be snuck through to get it passed?' Rodolfich said. 'I think the people of Pascagoula need to be treated with more respect than that.'"
