I was busy chatting with Mom about being generally depressed and hopeless when the phone rang. The ID was a number I didn't recognize - so I prepared myself to tell the telemarketer not to call on my cell phone anymore...

But this was no telemarketer. This was Beverly calling from the MS grant program to let me know that they had processed our appeal and based on the second (third - but who's counting?) assessment of our home & damage .... (At this point I was bracing myself for her to say that they had determined that our appeal was baseless and was trying to figure out how I would remain composed when I said "okay, thanks") That we are due an additional check.

The check will be mailed next week, she said - but gave me her phone number and asked if I would call her next Tuesday to check the status.

Mostly she was calling to find out if the additional money would satisfy our appeal -- and asked if she could close our file. (Yes yes.. close it... frame it.. burn it... Whatever it takes!)

It's excellent timing and I'm bouncing off the walls over here -- uh.. carefully cause some of the paint is wet.... Of course there's no word yet on how this was actually recalculated - and I'll be curious to find out if there was an adjustment to the disputed percent damage. Perhaps we'll find that out next week.

Hi! Thanks for your site. My boyfriend was in hurricane Katrina and told he did not qualify for MDA grant shortly after the storm. Word of mouth got him to re-apply in January and he did qualify! However, since then he had sold the house at a loss...and it is a slow-moving nightmare as he had to plead with current homeowners...then they finally agreed to the program, then he had to track down his ex, who took another month to respond...now we are just waiting to see how things will move but after reading your experiences...we are not so sure things will be moving very quickly.

Thanks for the information though!! I don't want him to get his hopes up too much for this grant.

I'm glad I could be of some use!

Honestly, it's worth just hanging in there. The whole process is so slow and nerve-wracking -- but something will happen eventually and hopefully your boyfriend will be able to recover at least part of his loss.

After going through all the hassles of getting those covenants and deed documents signed -- he totally deserves a quick response from MDA.
I'll keep my fingers crossed.
