That's right! We've been staining grout again! There were a few spots that we didn't get to during our last can of $40 grout stain. This is because during our last grout-staining session we had the brilliant idea of dividing up the remaining stain so we could work at the same time. Yes - that really is a good idea. The part that wasn't a good idea.. was that while we left one half of the stain in the original can, we transferred the other half into a plastic solo cup. We did this before we read the part on the can about 'solvents.. blah blah'. And I was the lucky soul who ended up with the solo cup.
Soooo what happened was this: I was happily painting away - lying on my stomach trying to reach the grout that extended under the cabinets when I realized there was grout stain all over my hands & arms and -- oh yes, the kitchen floor. It took a good two or three minutes for it all to register and I realized that the bottom of my grout stain cup did not come with me the last time I changed locations. Wasted grout stain. Big mess. No more plastic cups!
So, as I was saying, we have a few spots that we never managed to stain with the last can of grout stain... In addition, large swaths of floor are in need of a second coat.. while still others are in need of at least touch-up. Our grout-staining days are not over yet. This second coat and touch-up may actually take longer than the initial coat actually... Especially now that we are sort of using the kitchen again. Not only do we have to limit our staining time to time when we can keep small feet and paws from tracking stain all over the house.. but a used kitchen floor is a dirty kitchen floor!! The entire staining process slows way, way down when we encounter stray dog hairs that sweeping missed.. or spilled sugar near the coffee pot...
Someday it will be finished... and I will never look at grout the same way again.
