Back to the grout

We gave ourselves the day off on the 26th... But yesterday we decided it was time to get back to work on the kitchen and resumed grout-staining in earnest.

Staining grout means that we will have to remove haze from the tiles all over again... but there's plenty to stain before we start worrying about that...

Quite a contrast between the stained and unstained grout.

We stained grout well into the night last night... and started again this morning -- though not very early this morning. Recalling our last marathon project -- grinding thinset off the kitchen floor -- Dave was wondering outloud today why we always end up with the hands-and-knees projects.

Dried grout stain in the sunlight this morning.

The darker grout does change the look of the floor.

We stopped for the night now because we can no longer get off the floor without assistance. We did get one coat of stain on all of the kitchen floor - with the exception of under the cabinet overhangs and the kitchen closet. Once those two little projects (ha!) are done -- then we will have to basically apply a second coat of the stuff to the entire floor. Just to keep our sanity, we are referring to this phase as 'touch up'. Then we'll need to buff the edges of the tiles where we missed wiping up excess stain... Then we'll need to buff the tiles to take off the stain/mineral spirits haze.
