Closing the grant closing

Dave and I completed the closing process today for our HAP grant. It was relatively painless - as the guy shuffling our paperwork assured us it would be. We are to expect anywhere from a 10 day to a 3.5 week wait now for our check to be issued.

Another mystery solved -- the grant check WILL be made payable to both Dave and I and our mortgage company. Therefore, when it is received we will have to endorse it and send it on to the mortgage company just as we did with our check from the insurance company. What the mortgage company will do at this point is still slightly up in the air. We were told that unless we owe back payments, etc. the mortgage company should simply sign the check over to us -- however, it does remain up to the company in question. We shall see.

In another pending personal development -- we were encouraged to dispute the assessed percent damage on our property if we believed it was too low... and we were assured that any appeal would not slow down the processing of the existing grant amount. We discussed it on our way home... and we wonder if adding our two cents about our assessment (which is actually much too low) would actually help establish that the assessments seem to be off-kilter. It's a tough call and we don't want to come off as greedy... As I've said before -- our actual grant amount came in very close to the amount we were asking for in April. However, the amount was only calculated high enough based on a much higher valuation of our property -- NOT because of the damage assessment. If our property had been valued for what it was actually insured for our grant amount would have been woefully inadequate. Fortunately, the deadline to file an appeal has also been extended so we'll have a couple more weeks to think it over.
