Why I don't answer my phone...

I think our phone rings a lot. I'm not sure though - because I'm never around to answer it. I suspect that it does, however, because we're often asked why we never answer our phone...

We don't get many chances to answer the phone. We're working ourselves to death. I mean that in a good way -- er.. if that can be meant in a good way. It's just that there is so much to do and only so many hours in a given day....

Several times I tried to bring my cell phone out with me when I was working. Once I found it buried under a pile of straw. Twice I found it in the bottom of a tool box. And then there was the time I found it out on the lawn... It wouldn't have been all that exciting except for the fact that I discovered it while I was mowing the grass. Now I just leave it inside where it will be safe. I don't know why it matters that it's safe since we never seem to answer it.... But you know it's a good thing to have a phone around in case of a minor emergency (not a major emergency.. because, you see, phones don't work in major emergencies....).

Weeds. Bane of my existence.

The gnats gave us a reprieve today so we toiled and labored in the backyard. The goal is to get the weeds out of the flowerbeds before the weather consistently warms up... If they are left there until conditions are actually favorable for growth we will have to hack our way out the back door with a machete. (And our machete was severely damaged in Hurricane Katrina... so we will be out of luck...)

Ever notice that I talk about our 'toil and labor' and then post a picture of Dave toiling and laboring?

Dave and I do a lot of tag-teaming when we're working. It is the only thing that works with all the kids and critters running around our house. Today I gouged out weeds and dug up dead shrubs while Dave chased the kids around the yard with a purple light sabre. When I could take no more... er.. or maybe when he could take no more -- not sure which -- he would work on spreading out the mulch while I bored the children with stories from the exciting world of making compost.

You can see the enthusiasm on William's face. He really loves to hear about the importance of the proper balance of carbon and nitrogen in garden soil.

It's so nice that our inherent skills complement one another.

Tomorrow begins a fresh week for us ... and we'll have to put a little more effort into answering the phone, I'm afraid. We're waiting to hear something... anything... from our roofing buddies who have yet to come fix the siding and fascia (yes, the hole still gapes) or even let us know that they still intend to do so. We also were thrilled to have someone come by on Friday to start working on an estimate for the replacement of our baseboards....

Maybe even possibly properly install the window and door trim so I don't have to!! He told us that we could save some money by getting the needed materials ourselves and having them on-site for installation only. We're hoping that with the money we save by doing the legwork and finding the baseboards we need, we can afford to have the other trim installed as well. It would be a huge relief since I have managed to install a total of 5 pieces of trim in six months myself. At this rate I can accurately estimate that it will take 98 months (or just over 8 years) for me to complete the door and window trim.

I'll keep the phone on.

The phone thing cracks me up! It's too cold here for me to lose my phone outside under piles of snow, as Im not normally rolling around in the snow, but that could change any day now. I went out and bought myself a headset and clip for my phone, thinking I would never have a problem finding my phone again. Most days the headset is on my head when the phone starts ringing then I start yelling HELLO? HELLO? into it, but alas, the phone is no longer attached to the headset, and no where to be found!

Too cold for snow angels yet, huh?

I knew, of all people, you would understand the phone thing. I'm dying over here at the thought of you screaming into a disconnected headset...
Thank you for saving me a little money - I was considering something like that for myself, you see.

Oh - and that's exactly why I don't use one of those baby slings....
