There were no hotel rooms in Mobile. We didn't realize that Mobile was hit by the hurricane as well and they are in disarray. Volunteers and contractors from all over the country have filled the hotel rooms there on their way to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. We couldn't continue to drive as the trip there took half a tank of gas so we drove around from gas station to gas station trying to find a place with gasoline left - but never did. We did manage to find three bags of ice and a grocery store that had bottled water and baby formula - so we got that and drove home. Of course we had about 1 1/2 bags of ice by the time we got it home.. but it's better than nothing. Unfortunately now we only have 1/2 tank of gas to ration and we're even less able to go out.

There are no improvements. No sewer. No running water. No electricity. No telephone. No help. There are no food drop offs and no trucks driving through with water. There are no medical personnel fanning out across neighborhoods... No one has even come here to check for dead bodies. There is nothing. There are no police. There is no Red Cross.

We called Dave's parents. They are trying to get one of his friends to drive from Jacksonville to get us out of here. We don't know what to do. We can't be stranded in Jacksonville any more than we are stranded here. The banks are wrecked. We wouldn't have the money to get back from Jacksonville and we aren't sure where we could stay when we got there. We don't know when Dave is supposed to go to work. We have no idea what is going on. Besides, what kind of car would Dave's friend have to be driving to transport four adults (including himself), four children (two in carseats), and six animals all the way to Jacksonville?

Dave called a friend from work who lives in Mobile. He said we can come stay with them if we need to - but we have to get there. We have enough gas to get there only if we can find it with no problems.. but he said there is no gas in Mobile. Besides - we can't take Mom's car all the way to Mobile. She doesn't want to leave and she can't be left without a car. What do we do?

I called Dave's mother back and asked her to post a note on www.pets.ca and www.petworld.forumup.com. I have friends there and they are all good and resourceful people. Maybe there is some way they can find to help us. Even if they just get in touch with news agencies -- someone out there -- to let them know that we're all still here and we need help. All the news mentions is New Orleans. We're rotting over here. Somebody help us.
