Last night was only a little better simply because the carpet is gone. Parts of the concrete slab have started to dry so if you walk very carefully you can find a way around the standing water. There's still a layer of mud or muck on absolutely everything though and my feet have started to bleed. The baby isn't doing well. I can't cool her off. Dave and I have been taking turns fanning her and rubbing her down with whatever water we can find. We use the melted ice to keep Yvonne cool and soak her shirt with it during the day but she's not comfortable at all. My mother drove back to her house today. I wonder how she's doing there tonight.
The extra baby food we had for Yvonne flooded and the caps rusted shut or busted open from the salt water so we haven't been able to find much that she will eat. We have plenty of canned goods and such for the rest of us but we still have no desire to eat it. The boys snack on crackers and chips throughout the day so mostly they are thirsty. I put up some string in the backyard to use as clothesline and we've started trying to dry out some of our blankets and towels so we can clean. Some water came out of the tap today - about three gallons worth and I filled some empty water jugs with that to wash with. The laundry soap had flooded and Dave threw it out on the pile - but I went out with a bucket and managed to salvage a good bit of it from the middle of the box where it wasn't so brown. I started using the camp stove for warming the boys food. Of course the only problem is trying to wash out dishes with the little water we have - but I'm figuring it out slowly.
Everywhere we look we find something else that we have to throw out. We had forgotten to even look in our cabinets before. Everything on the bottom two shelves is soaked.. and most of the stuff that was not directly in the water is now ruined from the humidity in the house. We threw out mounds of things today and there's so much more.
There is still no relief today. No trucks. No helicopters. Nothing. We heard on the radio that the levee broke in New Orleans... Maybe that's where all the help went. Are we forgotten? Does anybody know what happened down here?
